Mundaring
Weir Hotel

Introduction
The
Mundaring Weir Hotel is situated in the heart of State Jarrah Forest just 45
minutes from Perth
city centre. It is built on the
first piece of freehold land, five minutes walk from the Weir. The
drive from Kalamunda is particularly scenic.
Colourful wildflowers line the roadside and at dusk kangaroos can be
seen grazing.
The Mundaring Weir Hotel was built in 1898 by Fred Jacoby, it was then called The Reservoir Hotel and consisted of a one storey building which can still be found behind the two storey addition built around 1906.
Despite the effort of the three local police officers the sale of sly grog was rampant on the Weir construction site until the establishment of the hotel. The hotel housed the local post office in a room next to the bar.
C. Y. O'Connor, the engineer responsible for The Goldfields Water Supply used the hotel as his office when he visited the Weir construction site, often staying overnight in one of the upstairs rooms rather than travelling back to Perth at night.
The hotel also had an accommodation wing built on what is now the upper beer garden. It contained 12 rooms but it was demolished in the early seventies.
Some
of the building materials for the construction of the hotel were brought out
to Australia from England by sailing ship. A bricklayer doing repairs
to the foundation of the fireplace, which is now the Coffee Shop found bricks
bearing the name of his home town in the north of England.
The current owner, Jens Jorgensen, bought the hotel in 1984 when it was on the verge of closing down. The property was run down, the ground littered with old car bodies and livestock grazed behind the hotel.
Since then the hotel has been transformed into a wonderful destination for people wanting to escape the city without having to travel too far.
